His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, is a world-renowned Tibetan Buddhist master, a living buddha who embodies wisdom and compassion.
The Karmapa has appeared for many lifetimes in Tibet and India, acting for the benefit of all sentient beings. His reincarnations are said to be “self-recognized:” near the end of life, each Karmapa has composed a letter of prediction containing details about his future birth, allowing him to be found as a child in the next life.
The present Karmapa was discovered at a young age by a search party in Tibet following one such prediction letter. He was enthroned at Tsurphu Monastery and spent his early life in intensive study. In 2000, he escaped from Tibet to India with the aspiration to benefit sentient beings and uphold and spread the Buddhadharma.
In India, he received full teachings from masters of his Karma Kagyu lineage, studying Buddhist philosophy and treatises from great masters of all schools of Tibetan Buddhism, while also learning modern science and languages.
Known for his compassion, charisma, candor and radiant presence, His Holiness is adept at interpreting ancient teachings for today’s world. His profound realization causes him to be revered by millions of Buddhist worldwide.
Enthusiastic followers of His Holiness Karmapa worldwide have taken an interest in his many projects and causes – religious freedom, a sound and harmonious earth, and the health that comes from a contemplative life.
Here, a group of followers has taken up the cause of caring for His Holiness’ seat in the United States.
This seat, called Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (“Place of the Buddha’s Teachings of the Three Wheel-Turnings and the Karma Kagyu Lineage”) is located in Woodstock, NY.
KTD has just finished constructing a Residence Wing for housing retreats and classes for both Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike, and the Friends of KTD are trying to help His Holiness retire the $3 million debt incurred while finishing the Residence.
The premise of paying $1 a day for three years is simple; like the philosophy of loving-kindness itself, small actions can accomplish great goals.
